Comment on the Launch of Scotland’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy

Scotland’s AI Strategy, published today (Monday, 22 March 2021), sets out how Scotland will become a world-leader in trustworthy, ethical and inclusive artificial intelligence.

As part of this, the college sector will support upskilling and reskilling opportunities for learners across Scotland to aid the development of the skilled AI workforce, whilst increasing diversity in the AI skills pool by ensuring those opportunities are available to those learners, both young and old, from the most deprived communities served by the college sector.

Shona Struthers, Chief Executive of Colleges Scotland, said:

“Scotland’s AI Strategy marks a further key development in Scotland’s ambition to thrive in a digital world, following the publication of the Digital Strategy for Scotland earlier this month, and we look forward to colleges building on their work to date in upskilling talented individuals in AI by empowering individuals to develop the skills to enter the AI workforce, and by supporting local economies through both facilitating and empowering innovation across business sectors.

“We know that the role of the college sector in creating Foundations for Success and in building an AI Powerhouse, in line with the vision established in the Strategy, will be vital to truly ensuring that both people and places benefit from AI and in guaranteeing that no one is left behind through the delivery of the strategy and as part of the wider sustainable and inclusive recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.”
