College Leaders Convene at Fife College to Explore Transformation in Tertiary Education and Skills Delivery

College leaders and key stakeholders from across the UK gathered at Fife College today (Tuesday 9 June) for a major conference focused on the future of post school education and the critical role colleges play in delivering skills for the economy.

The conference brought together senior representatives from government, funding bodies, and industry to explore “Transformation in the Tertiary Landscape” and how colleges can deepen engagement with employers to meet evolving workforce needs.

The conference is taking place after the recent launch of the College Sector of The Future workstream, a joint piece of work convened by Colleges Scotland, the Scottish Funding Council and the Scottish Government.

Gavin Donoghue, Chief Executive of Colleges Scotland, said:

“Colleges are at the forefront of delivering the skills that Scotland needs now and in the future. This conference highlights the scale of transformation taking place across the tertiary sector and the vital role collaboration plays in that journey.

“By working closely with employers, governments and partners, colleges can continue to adapt quickly, support learners at every stage of life, and drive inclusive economic growth in communities across the country.”

The conference reinforced the central role of colleges in responding to economic and societal change, and the importance of continued partnership working to build a flexible, future ready skills system.

The Minister for Innovation, Technology and Tertiary Education Ben Macpherson MSP gave the ministerial update to delegates.

The first panel session examined transformation across the UK’s tertiary education system. Chaired by Angela Cox, Chair of the College Principals’ Group and Principal and Chief Executive of Ayrshire College, the discussion featured:

  • David Hughes CBE, Chief Executive Officer, Association of Colleges
  • Francesca Osowska OBE, Chief Executive, Scottish Funding Council
  • Louise Watson, Acting Head of Skills and Education Group, Department for the Economy Northern Ireland.

Panellists explored the changing policy landscape, funding challenges, and opportunities for greater collaboration across nations to ensure colleges remain at the heart of economic growth and social mobility.

A second panel focused on the relationship between colleges, employers and skills. Chaired by Dr Waiyin Hatton, Chair of the College Chairs’ Group and Regional Chair at West College Scotland, speakers included:

  • Charandeep Singh BEM, Chief Executive, Scottish Chambers of Commerce
  • Jennifer MacDonald, Skills and Culture Lead, Scottish Engineering
  • Catherine McWilliam, Nations Director – Scotland, IoD Scotland
  • Gordon McGuinness, Director, Industry and Enterprise Networks, Skills Development Scotland.
