UK to Rejoin Erasmus Programme in 2027, Opening Doors for Learners and Staff

The UK Government has announced plans to rejoin the Erasmus+ programme in 2027, six years after leaving the scheme as part of the EU withdrawal agreement.

The return of Erasmus+ will once again provide transformative opportunities for college students to study or train abroad. The programme enables participants to study or undertake internships in another country for periods ranging from two to twelve months.

For college staff, Erasmus+ supports professional development, fosters innovation, and strengthens collaboration with leading institutions across Europe.

Gavin Donoghue, Chief Executive of Colleges Scotland said: “It’s very welcome that the Erasmus student exchange programme will be returning in 2027.  This initiative provides life changing opportunities for college learners and staff alike – broadening horizons, building confidence and improving employability for students, particularly students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

“For colleges, participation brings significant benefits, including improved retention and attainment, curriculum innovation and stronger international networks that reinforce Scotland’s reputation for vocational excellence.”
