Congratulations! Considering Your Next Steps

Blog by Tom Hall, Senior Policy Officer, Colleges Scotland

By now, you will have received your SQA examination results. First and foremost – congratulations! Your results are a testament to the dedication, effort, and resilience you have demonstrated over many months of study and hard work. You should take great pride in your accomplishments.

While it’s natural to feel some uncertainty about the future, it is equally important to take time to acknowledge and celebrate your success. You have earned it.

Exploring Your Options

As you consider your next steps, I would encourage you to explore the opportunities available through Scotland’s colleges. There is a college near you that would be delighted to welcome you as a student for the 2025/26 academic year.

Each year, approximately 218,000 individuals choose to study at college, gaining valuable qualifications and developing skills that open doors to employment, further or higher education, and long-term career success.

The Benefits of College Education

Colleges offer a wide range of benefits beyond academic achievement:

·      Practical, career-focused training in environments that replicate real-world workplaces – such as laboratories, workshops, salons, and kitchens.

·      Access to support services, including financial guidance, mental health counselling, and welfare support. Colleges are inclusive institutions that recognise and accommodate the diverse needs of all learners, including those with disabilities.

·      Opportunities for personal development, including participation in student associations, clubs, sports, volunteering, and in some cases, international study programmes.

Scotland’s economy is currently in need of skilled professionals in sectors such as hospitality and tourism, cyber security, construction and green industries – including wind turbine technology, electric vehicle maintenance, and a wide range of engineering roles. Colleges are uniquely positioned to equip you with the skills required to meet these demands.

Earn While You Learn

Another valuable pathway offered through colleges is Modern Apprenticeship programmes. Over 14,000 apprentices are supported every year, combining practical work experience with employers and formal education and training in college.

Your Future Starts Here

As you reflect on your future, I encourage you to consider college as a meaningful and rewarding next step. It is a place where you can continue to grow, achieve, and prepare for a successful and fulfilling career.

Whatever path you choose, I wish you every success in the journey ahead.
