Maintaining the Momentum Towards Fair Access

Sir Peter Scott published his final report as Commissioner for Fair Access yesterday (Tuesday 31 May 2022).

The report shows a continued increase in the number of students from Scotland’s most deprived communities entering full-time first-year degree courses in Academic Year 2020/21, with the role of Scotland’s colleges in supporting the access agenda further highlighted and reinforced.

Shona Struthers, Chief Executive of Colleges Scotland, said: “The report is further evidence of the key role played by colleges in providing pathways for students from deprived communities to progress onto university level study.

“As we recover from the pandemic, it is vital that colleges continue to provide these opportunities and ensure that we continue to maintain the positive progression overseen during Sir Peter’s time as Commissioner - as Sir Peter outlines himself in the report ‘Colleges are in and of their communities’ and will continue to be vital civic anchors locally and regionally.

“I would like to thank Sir Peter for his time as Fair Access Commissioner and for the work he has taken forward with the college sector over the last five years and look forward to taking this agenda forward with the next Commissioner”.
